What to Do in Savannah in the Fall: A Local’s Guide to the Best Things to Do
by
I know we’re all dreaming of escaping the summer heat and this week is definitely the first taste of False Fall. For those of you new to the South, False Fall is the tantalizing moment when it rains just long enough to keep us from feeling like steamed crab legs, instead cooling it off just enough that we become brave enough to venture out in sweaters. Usually a huge mistake, but a girl can dream.
Anyways, if you’ve been inundated with fall content on social media like the rest of us and have begun curating your perfect fall wardrobe, chances are you’re in the fall mindset, so let's roll with that together. We’re creating the perfect guide to enjoying everything Savannah has to offer in the fall!
1. Explore Savannah's Historic Squares
Arguably, one of the best parts of Savannah are the squares, they make it really hard to get lost in the city. Another bonus? They are all absolutely gorgeous and full of history!
If you are just visiting or if you’re a local looking to learn more about the city, Savannah has some great self-guided tours available, with historical pairings to help you learn more about each square. Our favorite must-visit squares are definitely Lafayette, Chippewa (think Forrest Gump) and Monterey Square for the most beautiful views.
2. Spend the Day in Forsyth Park
You can’t go wrong with a Saturday morning spent in the Central Park of Savannah, Forsyth Park. With the Forsyth Farmer’s market opening at 9:00 AM on Saturday mornings, this is the perfect opportunity to grab a coffee and peruse the booths.
After acquiring all of your goodies, walk around the park or lay out a picnic blanket, get cozy with a good book, and enjoy the cool, crisp breeze.
3. Put Sunday Scaries to the Test
Savannah is considered the most haunted city in America (by some travel sites, probably using it as a marketing ploy). I can’t say I’ve ever had a ghostly encounter walking down the street but never say never.
Savannah’s rich history is tragic, and the city is literally built on the bones of the dead, so some would definitely qualify the city as spooky. If that sounds right up your alley, you may enjoy a ghost tour in a hearse, exploring the Sorrel-Weed House (that one just feels haunted the second you walk in), or a visit to Savannah’s famous Bonaventure Cemetery.
4. Enjoy Savannah's Outdoor Dining & Patio Season
As temperatures become more manageable, patios become prime real estate. I mean we all love a summer dinner on the water, but a fall dinner where you can sit outside and not feel like a wet towel? Count me in.
We could list a million outdoor dining recommendations because you truly can’t go wrong in Savannah, but Starland Yard, The Wyld, Zunzi’s, and Seawolf do happen to be a few of our favorites. You also can enjoy an iced coffee in the Foxy Loxy courtyard or a fun drink at Bar Julien for a rooftop vibe.
5. Fall Is a Great Time to Explore Savannah Neighborhoods
If you’re not trying to venture too far from home, you can’t go wrong with taking a scenic tour through some of Savannah’s most iconic neighborhoods. Explore Ardsley Park, grab coffee in Starland, or spend an afternoon around Isle of Hope.
Spending a few hours under the beautiful oaks looking at beautiful houses is never a bad way to spend an afternoon. Plus, you might even fall in love with your next home along the way.
I may be biased as a native Savannahian in saying that this city has something to offer in every season, but I truly think it does. Fall in Savannah is the much needed reprieve after the sweltering summer heat, so think of the cool breeze as your reward for being so brave during the summer.
